Can I Steam Clean My Mattress?

My 2 year old had an accident while sleeping in my bed the other night. I used the woolite for upholstry, and I even tried the pet stain remover stuff. Still that smell is there...yuck! I swear she must have soaked it! Anyway... I do have a steam cleaner. Can I steam clean my mattress without adverse effects? (i.e. not drying well adn then having mold or something) I went to the Bissell website but found very little info. Guess I have to peruse every steam cleaning site out there?! I guess it isn't really STEAM cleaning. It's a DEEP cleaner... like a wet vac kinda thing...I have a Bissell...

  • I haven't quite had the same situation (I have a cat, not a kid) but I have steamed and wet vac'd my mattress before. I was worried too but went for it! lol It worked fine. Just do it on a hot day, leave it outside or don't open all the windows. Don't overdo the cleaning either. It might not get it all out but it should be a lot better. My cat freaked out in a storm one night and I steamed it and used the pet stain remover too. The urine hadn't seeped in too far and now there is no odor, unless everyone is lying to me and I got used to it!

Sadly, there is no way to completely remove the urine. You will need to replace the mattress. A professional cleaner will come out and clean it with an alcohol based cleaner but will tell you also that the urine soaks through and through the mattress and there is no hope of ever getting it completely clean and mold and bacteria will breed. I have had to replace my kids mattress once and it was an expensive lesson but now all the mattresses in the house have vinyl zip covers over them including mine.

I've steam cleaned my mattress and it worked fine. My cat peed on my bed. I used 'Kids 'N Pets' first. I soaked the area. Then I used the steam cleaner (I have the Little Green Machine) to soak up the liquid. I put all of my fans around the bed and it dried quickly. Then I used the steam cleaner again using the usual cleanser on the entire top of the mattress and got out the fans again. It dried pretty fast, but it was the beginning of summer. It didn't mold and I'm very allergic to mold. Granted cats don't pee as much as kids, but on the other hand, cat pee smells worse.

you can steam clean it......but after you so spray it down with lysol to protect it from mold. Your best bet would be to buy a new mattress...but if you cant......steam clean it.....and let it dry a few days. One your little ones if going to use it again........you can use a waterproof mattress cover to prevent this from happening again. :-)
